Boise Foothills Full Backyard — Terraced Pavers, Stone Walls & Custom Fire Pit

When the homeowners near Crane Creek Country Club called Fine Grade, they had a backyard that wasn't living up to its setting. The site backs directly to the golf course with sweeping views of the Boise Foothills, but years of flat, unimproved lawn left the space disconnected from its spectacular surroundings. They wanted a total reinvention — something bold, functional, and built to match the architectural character of their multi-story stone home.

The Design Challenge

The yard presented significant elevation change between the home's back entry and the lower lawn area, requiring a thoughtful multi-level solution. The goal was to break the grade into distinct, usable zones rather than fight it with a single retaining wall — creating a sequence of spaces that draw you through the yard and down toward the golf course views below.

Terraced Concrete & Artificial Turf Levels

The upper zone of the yard is defined by one of our most distinctive design signatures: alternating bands of broom-finished concrete slab and vibrant artificial turf laid in crisp parallel stripes. The effect is graphic and intentional — more architecture than lawn — and it creates a multi-functional surface that is equally suited to outdoor dining, entertaining, and active family use without a blade of maintenance grass to mow.

Each terrace level is separated by a custom stone retaining wall built from hand-selected natural ledge stone in warm buff and gray tones, capped with dark charcoal slate. The walls do heavy structural work while reading as designed elements in their own right. Steel railing systems on the stair transitions provide a modern counterpoint to the stone and echo the home's spiral staircase above.

Two-Tone Concrete Entry Steps

The transition from the home's back door down into the yard is marked by a striking set of two-tone concrete steps — deep charcoal treads paired with lighter gray risers — flanked by stone pillar columns with matching dark slate caps. The contrast is clean and deliberate, drawing the eye down into the yard and establishing the design language carried throughout the entire space.

Circular Flagstone Fire Pit Patio

At the base of the terraced zone, the yard opens into a generous circular fire pit area surfaced in irregular flagstone. The natural stone — in cool blue-grays and charcoals — provides texture and warmth that softens the precision of the upper concrete work. A custom round gas fire pit sits at the center, topped with a white granite cap ring and filled with black lava rock, creating a clean, polished focal point.

The fire pit is embraced by a sweeping curved stone seating wall built in the same natural ledge stone as the retaining walls above, capped in matching dark slate. The seating wall doubles as a privacy screen and wind break, making the fire pit zone usable in the cooler Foothills evenings that arrive early in the season. Decorative boulders anchor the transition between the flagstone patio and the surrounding mulch beds, tying the hardscape to the natural landscape.

Golf Course Views & Setting

Every design decision in this project was made with the view in mind. The circular fire pit patio is oriented to face Crane Creek's fairways and the rolling Boise Foothills beyond — a panoramic backdrop that makes every fire pit evening feel like a private resort experience. The wall heights, terrace elevations, and overall grading were all calibrated to preserve and frame those sightlines from every level of the yard.

The Result

This Boise Foothills project stands as a testament to what a full-scope landscape build can accomplish. What began as an underperforming backyard is now one of the most architecturally compelling outdoor spaces in the neighborhood — a multi-level environment that earns its setting, serves every function the family needs, and looks extraordinary from every angle, including from the fairway.
