Dry Creek Ranch Backyard Transformation

When the homeowners in Dry Creek Ranch reached out to Fine Grade, they had a clear vision: transform their flat, underutilized backyard into a destination-worthy outdoor living space. What they needed was someone who could handle every piece of the puzzle — from drainage engineering to plant selection — under one contract. That's our specialty.

The Challenge

The yard presented a classic combination of problems common to newer subdivisions: poor surface drainage that left soggy low spots after every rain, compacted soil that resisted healthy turf growth, and no defined entertaining space. The homeowners also wanted a centerpiece fire feature that felt permanent and custom-built — not a portable box dropped on a patio.

Paver Patio & Built-In Fire Pit Table

We designed and installed a large-format concrete paver patio using a clean, modern grey palette that complements the home's exterior. The patio was carefully graded to direct surface water away from the foundation and toward our drainage solution.

The focal point is a fully custom rectangular gas fire pit table constructed from stacked retaining wall blocks topped with large concrete cap pieces. We plumbed a dedicated gas line and installed a linear burner with black lava rock media, creating a dramatic, elongated flame that looks incredible day or night. The low-profile seating height of the cap allows Adirondack-style chairs to pull right up to the fire — it doubles as an outdoor dining surface when the burner isn't running.

French Drain System

Before any hardscape went in, we addressed the drainage issues that had plagued the yard. We installed a perforated pipe French drain system along the perimeter of the patio and across the low-lying sections of the turf area, daylighting to the far edge of the property. The system eliminates standing water after rain events and protects both the paver base and the new sod investment long-term.

Sod & Softscape

With the drainage resolved and the hardscape set, we prepared and seeded the turf zone with premium sod for an immediately lush, carpet-like finish. Along the patio border and fence line, we installed a curated softscape package: low-maintenance ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and evergreen shrubs selected for the Utah climate. The plantings add color, texture, and natural privacy screening without overwhelming maintenance requirements.

The Result

The finished backyard is exactly what the family envisioned — a complete outdoor room ready for late-night fire pit gatherings, kids playing on healthy grass, and a landscape that looks intentional and cared-for from every angle.
