Eagle Foothills Outdoor Living — Boulder Fire Pit, Waterfall & Dog Run

Some projects arrive with a clear brief: make this backyard extraordinary. This Dry Creek Ranch homesite in Eagle, Idaho was one of them. The clients had a large, flat space and a big vision — a fully realized outdoor living complex with distinct zones for gathering, relaxing, play, and pets. Fine Grade delivered every piece of it.

The Multi-Zone Paver Patio

The foundation of the design is an expansive paver patio system laid in a rich multi-tone slate blend — warm golds, cool grays, and deep charcoals — that references the natural color palette of the surrounding Idaho foothills. A large circular conversation zone anchors the center of the yard, surrounded by a broader rectangular field patio that ties together the outdoor seating areas, the waterfall feature, and the home's back entrance.

Every zone was carefully graded prior to installation to ensure long-term drainage performance. The curved edge of the circular patio is defined by a soldier-course border that gives the space a finished, intentional look from every angle — especially from above.

The Natural Boulder Gas Fire Pit

The project's showstopper is a custom gas fire pit carved from a massive natural amber onyx boulder. The raw, striated stone — banded in golden yellows, burnt oranges, and warm whites — was sourced, transported, and core-drilled on site to accept a round gas burner insert filled with black lava rock media.

The result is something you simply cannot buy off a shelf: a piece of geological art that functions as the living room anchor of the patio. Positioned at the center of the circular paver zone and ringed by four black Adirondack chairs, the boulder fire pit creates an intimate gathering circle with an unobstructed view to the foothills beyond. A second natural boulder side table echoes the material language and provides a functional accent.

Custom Stacked Stone Waterfall Wall

Along the back boundary of the entertaining space, we constructed a full stacked ledger stone waterfall wall flanked by matching stone pillar columns capped in dark slate. A stainless steel blade spillway is recessed into the wall face, sheeting a curtain of water down into a river rock basin at the base. The sound of moving water — audible from every seat on the patio — transforms the space acoustically as well as visually, masking ambient noise and creating a true resort-like atmosphere.

The basin is framed by black paver edging that integrates seamlessly with the main patio system, and decorative boulders at the base anchor the feature into the surrounding xeriscape planting beds.

Custom Dog Run

The clients share their home with dogs, so a purpose-built dog run was a non-negotiable part of the plan. We designed and installed a dedicated enclosed run integrated into the perimeter of the yard — positioned to keep the main patio area clean and open while giving the dogs a safe, dedicated space. Drainage was a primary design consideration for the run to ensure easy maintenance year-round.

Xeriscape Softscape

Framing the hardscape on all sides are sweeping xeriscape planting beds filled with river rock, decorative boulders, and a curated selection of drought-tolerant evergreen trees, ornamental grasses, and perennial shrubs selected for Idaho's climate. The planting design is intentionally low-maintenance — beautiful year-round without demanding constant irrigation or upkeep.

This Eagle Foothills project stands as one of the most complete outdoor living systems Fine Grade has ever delivered: a one-of-a-kind fire feature, resort-quality water element, functional pet infrastructure, and hardscape craftsmanship across every square foot — all framed by some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the Treasure Valley. It is the kind of backyard that earns a permanent spot on the highlight reel.
